OCTOBER BRINGS...

The Hunter's Moon...providing a guiding light for those who have completed the harvest and will now hunt for more winter victuals!! October also brings us the Halloween Moon, which is more appealing to me than the Hunter's Moon. OH HAPPY DAY....

I saw my first eagle in the wild today!!! S/he took to the skies from a tree very close by so we got a wonderful close-up before s/he showed us a few "soaring moves" and flew out of sight. Oct. 13th,a very special day for me, I am grateful.

IRRESISTIBLE EYECATCHER...

The brilliant color of the Cardinal Flower makes it a favorite late blooming wildflower...catching your attention, it brightens up the bank of the creek that is beginning to look a little shabby with no rain. They like filtered sun and moist feet! A favorite of hummingbirds...but poisonous to humanoids!!

SOMETHING DIFFERENT...

Attended Plow Day in the valley, where I found myself in the midst of old farmers, antique tractors and plows, and the even older method of plowing, teams of mules...oh, and lots of dust as they all wanted to display their wares and "turn a little dirt". Here we have the only baby at the show and he wants a kissie!

TAKE SOME TIME...

Native Americans honor all seasonal changes with celebration. Fall is a time of reflection on the passing year. So light a candle, relax in a bubble bath, put on some soft music, whatever relaxes you, and review your year, give Thanks for all the gifts you have received this year, bless your year, give yourself a pat on the back for a year well done, then let it go. Now plant a new seed or two for the coming year. Enjoy the harvest!!!

HARVEST MOON...

September's full moon gives us more time each day to harvest our crops...working till "late in the evening", we toil till the fields are bare and the pantries are full...now we are ready for the coming winter frosts!

LATE SUMMER IN THE APPLACHIANS...

Butterfly Weed...a favorite of the bees as well as the butterfly. The Butterfly Weed is a member of the Milk Weed family and therefore, supplies an ample supply of nectar for our flying insect buddies...grows prolifically along roadsides in the gravel and poor soil. Must get entire root to successfully transplant.

Ironweed and a UFO!!!...

hovering above one of the most beautiful roadside wildflowers. Named for the strong stem required to hold the large clusters of gorgeous purple flowers. Used by Native Americans for stomach aches.

AS PROMISED...

A hummingbird's nest...most nests are about the size of half a walnut shell, so, that would make this nest the "Mother of all hummingbird's nests". This nest is closer to the size of a coffee cup, made up of the usual moss, plant fibers and surprisingly they also use spider webs...found along a riverbank walkway by some very observant folks, who having stopped for a sit on the nearest bench, noticed the many trips of hummers to that particular tree. They went on a search as to why and discovered this well-camouflaged nest. My "hats off to them"...I still have trouble finding it and I know its there!
